It's confirmed! Liverpool has been awarded the title of European City of Culture for 2008 and preparations for the party are well under way.
Fun, friendly and dynamic, Liverpool is located in England's North West and has enjoyed staggering economic regeneration over the past decade. Building on the strength of the city's maritime history and warmth and vitality of its people, the 'pool of life' is a now a festival city with a thriving arts and cultural scene.
The hometown of The Beatles has more listed buildings than any other English city outside London, much of it undergoing renovation. The Albert Dock, a collection of listed warehouses on the waterfront, has recently become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the North. Liverpool Cathedral and 'The Three Graces' - the collective name for the three famous Edwardian monuments to maritime trade on the waterfront: the Port of Liverpool, Cunard and Liver Buildings, are among the city's most striking historical landmarks.
A short ride across the Mersey on the famous ferry is the Wirral Peninsula with a beautiful coastline, plenty of outdoor activities, restored historical warships and the University of Liverpool Botanical Gardens.

Liverpool's top attractions are located in the city centre and include The Walker Gallery and the Museum of Liverpool Life. Major exhibition spaces including Tate Liverpool and the Beatles Story Museum are located in Albert Dock. Most charge admission fees.
Liverpool Cathedral, the largest Anglican cathedral in Europe stands on the periphery of the city center, near Chinatown which incidentally is home to Europe's oldest Chinese community. A climb to the top of the cathedral tower (331 feet) rewards the hearty with breathtaking views.
Attractions located a short journey out of the city centre include the National Trust's Speke Hall, one of the most famous half-timbered houses in Britain, and Croxteth Hall and Country Park, formerly the stately home of the Earl of Sefton.
The outlying borough of Southport has 22 miles of coastline and lush countryside plus the region's top attraction for children, the Pleasureland theme park. The borough of St Helen's is home to the world's first industrial canal and the Grade 1 listed Sankey Viaduct, designed by Robert Stephenson and the site of his 'Rocket' trials to harness the power of steam in th 1820s.
